To make it simple and crisp, Singam is a must watch film, not merely for Surya fans, but also for the ardent buffs of commercial films. Director Hari’s previous three films – Ayya, Thamira Bharani and Seval were really disappointing. But this time, he is back with a bang as he strikes with a spectacular show that has each and every moment striding with raciness.
Right from the opening scene till the final rolling credits, you will not take out your eyes from the screens as such is the screenplay.
Perhaps, the trailers would have given you a wrong perception, it’s gonna be yet another potboiler released by Sun Pictures, but it has something than we actually expect from this film.
The film begins at Nalloore, a small town where Durai Singam (Surya), a newly appointed cop is seen settling down the town’s disputes amicably as he takes on each and every person over there as his close relatives. Kavya (Anushka), who comes to this town along with her sister for vacation, falls for Durai Singam for his good nature and he too reciprocates his love for her. But with the entry of Mayil Vaaganam (Prakash Raj), a kidnap racketeer in Chennai, things take a different turn as the pleasant ambience turns into a racy second half.
What happens next is something you must watch it over the screens as it make you worth paying pennies for it.
After standing out as a successful actor with classical films like ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’ and ‘Ayan’, he proves to be a victorious commercial hero with this film. He doesn’t overreact at the same sequences, where some of the other mass heroes intended to do it. He knows what really needs for the situations and has accomplished with it. Well with Anushka, it’s a surprising show as she gets more scope to perform unlike her other films, in which she appears with skimpy costumes for the glam-factors. Prakash Raja reminiscences of his previous performances in ‘Ghilli’ and other films, but it look interesting to see him in full-fledged role. Vivek’s comedy tracks are passable and he doesn’t get more importance. Radha Ravi, Bose Venkat, Nizhalgal Ravi, Yuvarani and Manorama are pictured with brilliant characters.
Devi Sri Prasad’s musical score is an added value as the songs act as a special speed breakers to the tensed situations and they have been placed at exact situations. ‘Kadhal Vandhale’ is a peppy number that brims the theatres with whistles and claps. Cinematography and editing is appreciative.
Though, there are certain illogical factors like placing camera mobile through keyhole to find the position of criminal and climax sequence of hearing train sound at First Class AC, it’s trivialized by the spellbinding fast-paced screenplay.
Hats off to Hari as he offers an excellent entertainment at the end of summer vacation.
Verdict: Strongly recommended

Banner: Akarshini Theatres
Production: R. Saravanan
Direction: Kavin Bala
Star-casts: Karan, Hari Priya, Kota Srinivas Rao, Sampath and others
Music: Vijay Anthony
Karan has been too choosy over roles. He has been quite indifferent over choosing different lead roles. He played the role of illicit liquor seller, cycle stand leaser and so on. This time, he takes on the role of a Tawali in court.
Let’s get it straight with the synopsis.
Velu (Karan), a Tawali is more frustrated with the wrong judgments against the poor and unprivileged. Apparently, he takes up the action of seeking justice with his own hands and sets out killing one by one. Later, the flashback reveals that his very own family was affected by a cruel politician (Kota Srinivasa Rao). Now, he has to settle scores with the politicians and his bad group.
This film isn’t something new as almost all the leading actors have performed the role of seeking justice at their own hands. Rajnikanth has performed the role in ‘Naan Sigappu Manidhan’, Kamal Haasan’s ‘Indian’, Vijayakanth’s ‘Ramana’ and so on.
Karan looks so bulky in size and has to shed more weight and choose yet more challenging roles. Firstly, he can better avoid shaking legs with girls and better there shouldn’t be any songs in his films. Debutant Hari Priya has nothing to do with this film as she takes the clichéd performance of falling in love with a person, shaking legs with him and then disappear gradually. Kota Srinivasa Rao is at his best and his performance is so flawless.
Musical score by Vijay Anthony is slightly displeasing and could have been better if he had focused better on it. Cinematography and Editing has no special mention.
This film may receive some good feedbacks across the towns, suburbs and villages as the audiences over there may reflect over the present age problems involved with the court.
Verdict: Could have been better

Production: Giriguja Productions
Direction: Madhumitha
Star-casts: Karthik Kumar, Shika, Jayaram, Anand Raj and others
Music: Selva Ganesh
‘Kola Kolaya Mundhrika’ has Karthik Kumar, Shika, Jayaram, Anand Raj and many others in lead roles. Directed by Madhumitha and produced by Giriguja Films International, the film happens to be based on treasure hunt.
The is about the present-age treasure hunt, The film started with a Zamindar sharing secrecy about his precious diamonds to his servant, Delhi Ganesh played the role of the zamindar’s servant. Zamindar and his wife murdered by his step brother, Anand Raj played the role of his step brother. There is a kid runs away from that place.
Twenty years later Krish as Karthik Kumar and Veni as Shika meets together during a marriage. At that time old servant calls Krish breaking open the mystery about diamond treasure. From there Krish started his journey, with Veni, the baddies, and Jayaram as cop.
Karthik Kumar acts smartly, and the new comer also played naturally, both of them carrying out their own way of acting, really it’s nice to see Anand Raj as comedic villainous role, he plays the role as one of his best in his carrier and Radha Ravi is also made his part good.
This movie hits the box office well; sure it won’t take worry of forthcoming new releases, because it attracts the all class audiences, this has the ability to pull audiences in for all the shows.
The previous release ‘Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam’ was based on old age treasure hunt and this one is a present age. It’s better to spend your time watching this film as it make you feel worth it.
Verdict: Time Pass Movie |

Banner: AGS Entertainment
Production: Kalpathy S Agoram
Direction: Chimbu Devan
Star-casts: Raghava Lawrence, Lakshmi Rai, Padmapriya, Sandhya, Nasser, Sai Kiran, Sams, M.S. Bhaskar, Manorama and many others
Music: G.V. Prakash
Success or failure – it doesn’t matter for director Chimbu Devan as the filmmaker has been well known for experimenting with various genres. His previous two films – Arai 305il Kadavul and Imsai Arasan 23m Pulikesi were based on completely new-fangled genres. Likewise, this film ‘Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam’ takes on with a new type film that is based on cowboy story, but in a hilarious way.
Raghava Lawrence has attempted for something new and has excelled with its. Lots of star-casts patently meant for comedic show makes Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam, a special film. But on the pars, there are few constraints like underrated comedy tracks too hard to laugh and enjoy them.
Jaishankarapuram is ruled by Kizhakku Kattai (Nasser – his characterization is based on Clint Eastwood) as the original leader Singam has disappeared. Soon as some of the people (Mouli, Ilavarasu and few others) in this region come across Singamuthu (Raghava Lawrence), a ready-to-be-hanged, they save him on the spur of moment. It’s all because of a costliest diamond he has lost. Later, it’s revealed that Singamuthu possesses the identical traits of Singam, who is not to found anywhere. Assuring that they would gift him a look-like precious diamond, Singamuthu is requested to protect their people from the one-eyed evil guy Kelaku Kattai.
Now, rest of the film is all about the clash between good and bad that set out a journey on the treasure hunt.
Lakshmi Rai, Padmapriya and Sandhya are the female lead roles and they have nothing special to do with this film. To be precise, they appear and suddenly disappear after a song. Padmapriya overreacts as barks through hard laughs. Lakshmi Rai is just brandishing her assets and Sandhya hasn’t got anything to do here. It’s Sams – the translator making big time.
Musically, G.V. Prakash does a mediocre job and background score would have been better.
On the whole, ‘Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam’ would have been a better script if he had avoided certain loopholes and unwanted comedy tracks. But for sure, it may be a delight for summer vacation as family audiences and Kids.

Banner: Tirupathi Brothers
Production: Subash Chandra Bose
Direction: Lingusamy
Star-casts: Karthi, Thamannah, Millind Soman, Jagan, Omar and others
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja
Followed by the grand success of ‘Paruthiveeran’ and ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’, actor Karthi geared up for a completely contrastive flick ‘Paiyaa’. Director Lingusamy has shot the film with the best technical excellence, but terribly fails to come up with an impressive narration. The film’s first half is brimmed with springiness while everything stumbles down as the story moves towards the second hour.
Story:
Set in backdrops of Bangalore, the film is about Shiva (Karthi), who comes all the way to Bangalore from Chennai for a job interview. While staying with his friends, he comes across a beautiful girl Charulatha (Thamannah) and falls in love with her at first sight. Followed by couple of encounters and a song, it’s a complete surprise for Shiva as Charu herself approaches him. Mistaking him to be a driver, she asks him to drive her to Mumbai. Just as they travel ahead on the Konkan Highway, they find themselves drenched in absolute terror when a group of Telugu speaking roughnecks chase them. With his smartness, Shiva diverts the car to another route only to find another gang from Mumbai chasing them.
It’s a do-or-die situation for Shiva to settle the scores with both the groups and can he really win over the heart of Charu without expressing his love forms crux of the story.
Performances:
Firstly, it’s Karthi whose neat appearance with stylish attires that captivates our interests. But his mannerisms are completely the same as in his previous films. He must come out of such boxes to get himself striking with different shows. He could’ve avoided overdosed heroism-bounded fights. Thamannah’s looks are extraordinary as she never looked so beautiful in any of her previous films. Jagan’s comedy tracks works as a better relief at some parts while Millind Soman’s characterization has been flimsily done.
Story, Screenplay and Direction:
Lingusamy has patently repeated his very own yesteryear films ‘Run’, ‘Ji’ and ‘Sandakozhi’. Well, coming across the heroine is something we have already seen in ‘Run’ while Ajith Kumar preventing the conflict breaking down during first half and finally smashing down them at interval point is same as in this flick while the act of hitting villain in his own territory is inspired from ‘Sandakozhi’.
Technical Aspects:
Technically, the musical score by Yuvan Shankar Raja is the highlighting asset of this flick as all the songs are top-notching in terms of music, picturing and technical vistas. Mathi’s cinematography brings us the eye-catching visuals, especially with beautiful locations of Western Ghats while Anthony’s editing offers more strength to the fast-moving screenplay.
Final Take:
If the filmmaker had attempted to project the plot in some other way, ‘Paiyaa’ would have been an interesting film for the season.
Verdict: Falls short off expectations…. |
